Why the map listing matters more than page one for dental practices
Nobody scrolls down to the organic results anymore. For a dental practice, the map is where the clicks are, and the practices sitting above you usually aren't better. They just look after their listing.

Search "dentist" plus your suburb on your phone and look at what comes up. A few ads, then the map with three practices on it, then the regular results underneath.
Most people never get past the map. They see three names, check which one is close, glance at the reviews and the photos, and tap call. If your practice isn't one of those three, you're relying on the small group of people who keep scrolling.
That's why, for most of the clinics we look after, the map listing gets sorted before anything else.
The practice above you probably isn't better than you
This is the part owners find hardest to hear. When a practice sits fourth in its own suburb, it's rarely because the three above it are better dentists. It's usually because their listings are looked after and theirs isn't.
Google is trying to work out three things: what you do, where you are, and whether you're trustworthy. A listing that answers those clearly gets shown. A listing that's half filled in, in the wrong category, with a phone number that doesn't match the website, gets passed over.
What actually moves a listing
None of this is clever. It just has to be done properly and kept up.
The right categories. Your primary category matters more than most people think. If you're a dental practice and you're listed under something vague, you're making Google guess.
Every field filled in. Services, hours, holiday hours, booking link, the treatments you actually offer. Empty fields are a missed chance to tell Google what you do.
Your details matching everywhere. Your practice name, address and phone number need to be identical everywhere they appear online. On your website, on the health fund directories, on the old listing someone set up years ago. Inconsistency is the most common reason a good practice sits fourth in its own suburb.
Photos and posts that keep it alive. A listing with recent photos of the actual clinic and the actual team looks like a business that's open and cared for. A listing with three photos from 2019 looks like the opposite.
A steady flow of reviews, answered properly. Ask every happy patient. Reply to every review, good or bad. Just remember the AHPRA rules: reviews help your ranking, but they can't be reposted in your advertising as testimonials about clinical care.
The website has to back it up
The map listing and the website work as one thing. Google checks one against the other.
So the website needs a page for each treatment you want to be found for, not a single services page with implants listed in eleven words. It needs your suburb and the suburbs you actually draw from, written for real people rather than a template with a suburb name swapped in. And it needs the right code underneath so search engines can tell exactly what the practice does and where.
That's how we built Artarmon Dentists: the map listing was a design constraint from day one, not something bolted on after launch.
How long it takes
You usually see map-pack movement in six to ten weeks. Competitive treatment terms like "dental implants" take longer, often four to nine months.
That's why we usually run Google Ads alongside it at the start. Ads bring enquiries in from week one while the listing and the site do the slower work underneath. Once the listing is pulling its weight, the ads can be pointed at the high value treatments instead of propping up the basics.
Where to start this week
If you only do one thing, search your practice name and check the listing yourself. Is the category right? Is every field filled in? Does the phone number match your website exactly? When were the last photos added?
Most practices find something on that list in five minutes. Fixing it is the cheapest marketing you'll do all year.
If you'd like us to have a look, give us a call. Twenty minutes, and we'll tell you what's holding the listing back.
